Notes

This c.1760 brass candlestick was likely made in Birmingham, England. Birmingham was home to numerous brass foundries, and the style of this candlestick matches that of others made in the city at this time. It is in the form of a "cannon barrel" as the stem bears the shape of a barrel of a cannon. The barrel also includes a knob candle ejector which can be raised up to remove a spent candle. The stem is fastened to the base by peening. The base has been lathe-turned to thin the base and to recover metal. The process of metal recovery carried over from early candlestick-making and continued throughout the 18th century. This candlestick was purchased using funds from the estate of Dr. Bruce English on December 18, 2023.
