Provenance

Notes

This parchment grants a tract of land on the North Fork of the Holstein River in Washington County Virginia to William Smith. The date is January 15, 1785. The reason for the land grant is unknown. Patrick Henry as acting Governor signed the document, transferring ownership of the land to Mr. Smith. At an unspecified time, the document came into the hands of Irvin Aaron, Vice President of First National Bank of Bristol, Tennessee. Mr. Aaron donated the land grant to the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation on September 27, 1961 in memory of his grandfather, Patrick Henry Giles (1846-1911).
