This land grant signed by Patrick Henry gave a set amount of land to William Hooks for his service in the American Revolution. Continental soldiers were given certain amounts of land according to their length of service and rank. Hooks received the "proportion of land allowed a private in the Continental line for three years service."
It is co-signed by Thomas Meriwether, who served as assistant clerk of the Council of State, with various interruptions, from 1782 until his resignation in June 1789.
The provenance of this item is unknown. The original accession file has no donor listed although the acquisition date is 1969.
