Provenance

Notes

This mortar and pestle set belonged to the Henry family at Red Hill and is said to have originally belonged to Patrick Henry. The set came into the possession of Lucy Gray Henry Harrison (1857–1944), Patrick Henry's great granddaughter, through her father, William Wirt Henry (1831–1900), and grandfather, John Henry (1796–1868). After her death, Harrison's possessions were auctioned off on June 30, 1945, including this mortar and pestle set. The Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation purchased the set from Mrs. Harrison's executrix, Elizabeth Kerper, at that auction.
