Notes
This white ironstone bowl is said to have belonged to John (1796–1868) and Elvira McClelland Henry (1808–1875) and was in use at Red Hill.
The bowl likely appears on an estate inventory taken at Red Hill after John died in 1868. It may be included among the "5 Dishes, Fruit stands, Butter bolt. etc" worth $5.00 in the dining room closet. These items were later sold in an estate sale of John's possessions on February 12, 1868. "5 Dishes, Fruit Stand, Butter Bolt. etc" were sold to Dr. Thomas Stanhope Henry (1833–1912) for $5.00.
Thomas Stanhope, a son of John and Elvira, also purchased his mother's reticulated compote (76.120) at this sale. Because the compote stayed in the Henry family before being given to PHMF, this bowl was likely part of the "5 Dishes" purchased by Thomas.
It can be assumed that Thomas later gave the bowl to his niece, Elizabeth Henry Lyons (1855–1920), or she inherited it after his death at Red Hill in 1912. Elizabeth was a daughter of William Wirt Henry (1831–1900), Thomas's brother, and a granddaughter to John. Elizabeth gave the bowl to her cousin, Katherine Lancaster, as a present on the occasion of her marriage to John H. Guy on October 20, 1914.
Mrs. Lancaster donated the bowl to the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation in 1966 in memory of her friend Florence Easley Richy, sister of James S. Easley, the first president of PHMF.
