This booklet is a compilation of poetry by Annie Elizabeth Redd Fontaine (1847-1936) from her son, John Winston Fontaine (1887-1973), for Christmas in 1936. The seventeen poems feature a variety of themes, including each of the four seasons, "Childhood Memories," and people in her life.
Annie Elizabeth Redd, a great-great-granddaughter of Patrick Henry, was born on January 18, 1847, at "Woodlawn" in Henry County, Virginia. She married Rev. Patrick Henry Fontaine (1841-1915), a great-great-grandson of Henry and her first cousin, on February 23, 1865. They had nine children, including John Winston Fontaine. She died on February 21, 1936, in Bethel Hill, North Carolina, and was buried with her husband in the Amis Chapel Cemetery (Granville, North Carolina).
John Winston Fontaine, a great-great-grandson of Patrick Henry, was born on January 27, 1887 at "Elmo" in Halifax County, Virginia. He never married and did not have children. John was a professor of music who taught at several colleges, including Atlantic Christian College (later Atlantic University) in Wilson, North Carolina. He died on August 21, 1973, and was buried with his parents in Amis Chapel Cemetery.
This booklet was given to PHMF on May 3, 2023, by Monique and Philip Heller. They inherited this object and the others in this accession from her stepmother, Catherine Spotswood Fontaine Lawrence (1938-2015), a third-great-granddaughter of Patrick Henry. Annie Elizabeth Redd Fontaine was her grandmother.
