Box 981 Bedford, Virginia 24523 Dear Ted: I sincerely regret that I cannot be with you tonight in honor of Patrick Henry and to dedicate the Red Hill Patrick Henry National Memorial. Please know that I am with you in spirit and send my warmest personal regards as you launch the fundraising campaign to preserve Red Hill. I was pleased to introduce legislation which was passed by the Congress to duly recognize the lifelong contributions of Patrick Henry by memorializing his last home and burial place, Red Hill. The resolution provided that the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation would operate and maintain the Red Hill National Memorial entirely with non-federal funds. In this time of federal budgetary constraints, this fresh approach to the preservation of historic sites will serve as a model, placing strong reliance on citizen support. Recognition of Patrick Henry is particularly appropriate this year - the eve of the Bicentennial of the Constitution - since Patrick Henry was instrumental in securing the adoption of the Bill of Rights as part of the U.S. Constitution. I commend you, my friends, for your efforts to preserve Red Hill and commemorate the llfe of that great Virginian, Patrick Henry, and wish you continued success in this endeavor. With best regards, Sincerely, John Warner JW/cb

Notes

This letter was written by Senator John Warner (1927–2021) to Theodore "Ted" Graves, president of the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation Board of Trustees, to congratulate him on the creation of the Red Hill Patrick Henry National Memorial. John William Warner III served as Secretary of the Navy during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1974. He then served five consecutive terms in the United States Senate, representing the Commonwealth of Virginia, from 1979 to 2009. On May 12, 1986, through Public Law 99-296, Red Hill was recognized by the 99th Congress as a US National Memorial and became henceforth known as the Red Hill Patrick Henry National Memorial. Theodore W. Graves gave this letter to the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation on April 1, 1987.
