Description

Bronze medal depicts Lady Liberation standing full length with head turned looking to the dawn of a new day, right foot resting on a war god's helmet with the hilt of a broken sword in the right hand and the broken blade in the left hand and reads 'World War II.' The reverse depicts a central palm branch and reads ' United States of America 1941 1945' and 'Freedom from fear and want' and 'Freedom of speech and religion.' The ribbon is red with vertical rainbow striping on either border.

Use

The WWII Victory Medal was awarded for service between December 7, 1941, and December 31, 1946, both dates inclusive, with no minimum time in service requirement.

Context

From the collection of Stephen Fitch, who was part of the inaugural crew and a plankowner of the USS Yorktown (CV-10). Stephen Fitch was a Lt. Commander in the Engineering Department on the USS Yorktown (CV-10). An artist at heart, Fitch would draw both small cartoons and comics as well as detailed schematics of engine compartments and staterooms. Fitch is also the artist behind the squadron emblems on the flight deck killboards.
