Description

A hexagonal bronze medal with a spread eagle holding three arrows in its talons and a shielding covering the body. The reverse has a small laurel branch at the bottom and reads "For Military Merit." The medal hangs from a green ribbon with two vertical white stripes near each edge of the ribbon.

The Navy Commendation Medal is awarded by the US Navy for gallantry in action.

Context

James H. Flatley was an accomplished aviator and Navy ace who served during the Second World War. Having served aboard three different carriers, including the USS Yorktown (CV-10), Flatley was an early innovator in carrier aviation. Flatley continued to be an advocate for the importance of carrier aviation throughout his career. Flatley retired in 1958 with the rank of Vice Admiral.
