Name/Title

A-4 Skyhawk Lands on The USS Yorktown (CVS-10)

Description

Small color slide of an A-4 Skyhawk catching the arresting cable while landing on the flightdeck of the USS Yorktown (CVS-10).

Context

A Navy light attack jet, The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was designed as a replacement for the still piston-driven Douglas A-1 Skyraider. The Skyhawks smaller size and lighter weight allowed it to still be utilized by the now aging Essex class carriers which were unable to launch heavier aircraft. Despite its small size, the Skyhawk would become an integral part of the Navy's arsenal during the Vietnam War. The Skyhawk served with the Navy from 1956 to 2003.
