Description

Black, metal fragment of a control panel identification plate taken from a downed Japanese kamikaze plane. The metal is punched out to accommodate indicator lights. Japanese writing is visible on the metal and denotes signals such as the safety indicator light, the emergency drop switch, and the power supply.

The information on these panels was used to help alert Japanese pilots to issues with their aircraft.

Context

A pilot with the VS-5 squadron on the USS Yorktown (CV-5), Ensign John Jorgenson received the Navy Cross for his actions at the Battle of the Coral Sea.
