Description

A compressed, white Styrofoam cup marked with the USS Yorktown (CV-5) logo of a bald eagle in flight with a cannon gripped in its talons. The cup is signed by Dr. Robert Ballard, William "Bill" Surgi, Jr., Harry Ferrier, Haruo Yoshino, and Yuji Akamatsu. two Japanese veterans of World War II.

Use

The compressed Styrofoam cup commemorates the discovery of the USS Yorktown (CV-5) wreck on May 19, 1998. The Styrofoam cup became compressed in the deep-sea pressure when Mr. Surgi attached it to the submarine and was sent down to the USS Yorktown (CV-5)'s wreckage at the bottom of the ocean.

Context

On May 19, 1998, Dr. Robert Ballard's expedition to the sight of the Battle of Midway included several veterans of the battle, all hoping to find their ship. William "Bill" Surgi was a Machinist's Mate aboard the Yorktown (CV-5). Harry Ferrier was a member of Torpedo Squadron 8. Haruo Yoshino and Yuji Akamatsu both served as pilots stationed aboard the Kaga, a Japanese ship sunk during the battle.
