Name/Title

Fifty Centavos Note

Description

Fifty Centavos note, issued by the Japanese Government and later collected by Wilbert Gauding. This piece of currency was used in the Philippines as part of Japan's occupation during World War Two.

Use

Imperial Japan hoped to use bills like these to establish control over the economies of the places that they occupied. Instead as the war progresses the currency became hyperinflated and largely useless.

Context

During the Second World War Imperial Japan would distribute its own form of printed currency in nations that it invaded in order to replace the existing monetary system. Both a plank owner and serving on board the USS Laffey (DD-724) throughout the war, Machinist’s Mate 2/c, Wilbert C. Gauding was aboard the destroyer at D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa.
