Scope and Content

A handwritten memo on the Communication Department Form of the summary of naval action around Okinawa during May 4th and 5th, 1945. It is classified top secret and contains a hand-written notation that "All officers are forbidden to pass any of this information to enlisted personnel". The memo contains a summary of the attacks on US ships, the damage incurred, and the manner of the attacks. The bottom of the second page contains the initials of the officers who viewed the memo.

Context

From the Collection of Frank Manson. Lt. Frank Manson was a Communications Officer aboard the USS Laffey (DD-724) from 1944-1945, as well as the press liaison for Commander Becton during the ship's Shipyard Worker Retention Tour.
