A-4 Skyhawks in Flight

Name/Title

A-4 Skyhawks in Flight

Description

Photograph of two A-4 Skyhawks in flight. One of the Skyhawks has the squadron logo for the anti-submarine fighter squadron one (VSF-1) emblazoned on the side.

Context

A Navy light attack jet, The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was designed as a replacement for the still piston-driven Douglas A-1 Skyraider. The Skyhawks smaller size and lighter weight allowed it to still be utilized by the now aging Essex class carriers which were unable to launch heavier aircraft. Despite its small size, the Skyhawk would become an integral part of the Navy's arsenal during the Vietnam War. The Skyhawk served with the Navy from 1956 to 2003.
