USS Yorktown (CVS-10) at Sea

Name/Title

USS Yorktown (CVS-10) at Sea

Description

Photograph of the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) headed out to sea. An S-2 Tracker can be seen on the flightdeck.

Context

Starting in the late 1950's the Yorktown was moved into the role of an antisubmarine warfare carrier. This meant her complement of aircraft would be tooled for that mission. Before the S-2 Tracker entered service the Navy would use two aircraft in antisubmarine operations. One aircraft would play the role of "hunter" whose job it was to detect and locate submarines. The other aircraft would play the role of "killer", and their responsibility was sinking the enemy submarine. The S-2 Tracker was the first aircraft in the US Navy that could fulfill both roles at the same time.
