Another A-4 Skyhawk LandingDescription
Photograph of the back of a flightdeck crewman on a sound powered phone, watching an A-4 Skyhawk land.Context
A Navy light attack jet, The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was designed as a replacement for the still piston-driven Douglas A-1 Skyraider. The Skyhawks smaller size and lighter weight allowed it to still be utilized by the now aging Essex class carriers which were unable to launch heavier aircraft. Despite its small size, the Skyhawk would become an integral part of the Navy's arsenal during the Vietnam War. The Skyhawk served with the Navy from 1956 to 2003.Collection
