An angular and crushed gray piece of metal with two lines of rivets and red kanji along the sides.

Use

This piece of metal made up part of a Mitsubishi A6M "Zero" Japanese aircraft carrier-based airplane.

Context

This metal fragment came from the last Japanese airplane to strike the USS Enterprise (CV-6) during World War II. Piloted by Lt. jg Shunsuke Tomiyasu, the kamikaze attack took place on May 14, 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa. The USS Enterprise's forward elevator was destroyed, and 14 men were killed with another 68 wounded.
