Description

A Japanese 10 yen Bank of Japan note printed in green, red, brown, and black ink. The bill is numbered "320853" and "628". The edges of the yen note are frayed and worn.

Use

A piece of currency used for the exchange of goods and services. Currency was also a popular item to collect among servicemembers in World War II.

Context

"Whoever was responsible for the installation of the Jacob's ladder...will always have my deepest gratitude. The gun crew used this to free ourselves to [the] flight deck to fight the fires." --James Lake James Lake was a gunner's mate and plankowner aboard the USS Franklin (CV-13) during World War II. Lake reportedly removed this bill from the wreckage of the kamikaze that struck the Franklin near Samar on October 30, 1944.
