Description

A conical, brass voice tube mounted on a wood base.

Use

These brass voice tubes were used to amplify the voice and make announcements aboard a Navy vessel.

Context

Donated by Alvin Tidwell. A seaman (S1/c) aboard the USS Franklin (CV-13), Alvin "Chigger" Tidwell was on watch during the March 19th, 1945, attack. Tidwell arrived to his battle station at the 20mm guns before being blow overboard and into the water. The USS Hunt picked up Tidwell after 5 hours treading water. After rescue, Tidwell was transferred to Maui for the rest of the war.
