Description

Bronze medal depicting a Navy cruiser and a B-24 Liberator bomber flying overhead. In the foreground is a sinking enemy submarine, and in the background is the skyline of a city that reads 'American Campaign.' The reverse depicts a bald eagle perched on a cliff and reads 'United States of America 1941 1945.' The ribbon is a light blue with a central set of vertical stripes of navy blue, red, and white, and with vertical stripes along either side of white, red, black, and white. The medal came in the original blue box with blue velvet lining.

Use

The American Campaign Medal was awarded for service within the American Theater between December 7, 1941, and March 2, 1946.

Context

Earned by Charles "Chuck" Bonness for his naval service. Charles Bonness was a seaman 2/c class aboard the USS Yorktown (CV-5) and a rear-gunner aboard an SBD Dauntless in Scouting Squadron Five (VS-5). Bonness was reported missing in action after the Battle of the Coral Sea on May 8, 1942.
