F-4J Phantom II

Description

A white aircraft with a black nose, a shamrock design on the tailfin and the National Aircraft Insignia consisting of a five-pointed white star on a circular blue field with red, white and blue vertical stripes on the sides. The Phantom II has marking for the 'Marines,' VMFA-333,' 'CM Jim Flatley,' and the bureau number '153077.' The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is an all-weather jet interceptor and fighter-bomber. The Phantom II is a two-seater aircraft with twin engines and supersonic capabilities. The F-4J variants were specifically designed for the US Navy and Marine Corps and were the first fighter jets with look-down/shoot-down capability.

Context

Originally developed for the US Navy by McDonnell Aircraft, the F-4 Phantom II was introduced in 1960. The versatile jet was quickly adopted by the Air Force and Marine Corps and used extensively during the Vietnam War. The Phantom II arrived at Patriots Point in 1991 and is on loan from the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida.
