S-2E Tracker

Description

A gray plane with a white undercarriage, the Tracker has a red, white, and Navy panther design on the tail fin and the National Aircraft Insignia consisting of a five-pointed white star on a circular blue field with red, white and blue vertical stripes on either side. The plane has markings for the 'Navy,' 'CVSG-55,' 'VS-23,' and the bureau number '151657.' The Grumman S-2E Tracker is a dual-engine, propeller-driven plan with foldable wings for maximum storage aboard aircraft carriers. The S-2E also has enlarged surfaces and extra fuel storage capabilities.

Context

Built for the US Navy for anti-submarine warfare, Grumman introduced the Tracker in 1952. It would continue in operation with the Navy until replaced by the S-3 Viking in the mid-1970s. The Tracker arrived at Patriots Point in 1987 and is on loan from the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida.
