Context

The UH-34 and the H-34 are the same Sikorsky helicopter with different names for different military branches. Beginning in 1962, and under the US Marine Corps designation of H-34, the helicopter served as the primary Marine Corps assault helicopter of the Vietnam War until its replacement by the turbine-powered CH-46 Sea Knight. It was originally designed in 1952 as a Navy anti-submarine warfare helicopter having evolved from the Sikorsky S-55 series. This craft was originally created for the US Navy as an HUS-1 Seahorse with utility transport designation. It was redesignated as a UH-34D Seahorse in 1962. The Seahorse arrived at Patriots Point in 1987 and is on loan from the National Naval Aviation Museum.
