Description

A leather fighter squadron two (VF-2) patch. The patch has black background with a red Chief Petty Officer rate with an eagle perched on top of the chevron. The motto "Adorimini" appears in scrollwork across the bottom of the patch and 'Lt. Flatley' appears in a white band across the top.

Use

This patch was used as both a way to designate members of the VF-2 squadron and to identify a particular member by name.

Context

James H. Flatley was an accomplished aviator and Navy ace who served during the Second World War. Having served aboard three different carriers, including the USS Yorktown (CV-10), Flatley was an early innovator in carrier aviation. Flatley continued to be an advocate for the importance of carrier aviation throughout his career. Flatley retired in 1958 with the rank of Vice Admiral.
