Illegal Speaker Assembly of Al Bauman

Description

A wire and metal frame assembly with a black plastic speaker on one end and an adapter cord on the other. The metal frame is attached to a spare bayonet, which would hook into a helmet.

Use

Worn in conjunction with the custom-made helmet in this collection, the speaker assembly attached in the place of the oxygen supply assembly to the helmet. The speaker assembly was made by some engineers on base at the request of Bauman's flight group. The oxygen mask was not meant to be removed during flight, making this custom speaker assembly attachment highly illegal.

Context

Albert Bauman served in the Marine Corps for nine years as an attack aviation pilot with one combat tour in Vietnam flying A-4 Skyhawks in South Vietnam. Bauman was part of the Marine detachment on the USS Hornet. He would later flying training missions off the USS Lexington as a trainer and Navy LSO.
