A white, rope monkey's fist sailing knot from USS Franklin (CV-13).

Use

A monkey's first or monkey's paw knot is named so for it's shape. The knot shape serves as a weighted way to more easily throw a ship's line or rope.

Context

From the collection of Harold Miller. Boatswain's Mate aboard the USS Franklin (CV-13) during World War II, Harold "Dutch" Miller first came aboard on January 31, 1944. Miller was aboard the ship for the March 19, 1945, Japanese attack against the Franklin. Miller survived the attack and was retained to help bring the carrier in for repairs at the Brooklyn Navy Shipyard in April 1945.
