This liberty pass was issued to Samuel Wingrove in 1951 while he was serving aboard the USS Palau (CVE-122).

Context

Liberty was the allotted time that a sailor could spend landside for a little bit of rest and relaxation. The items in this collection were donated by Samuel Wingrove, a plank owner and Water Tender aboard the USS Laffey (DD-724) during World War II. Wingrove was present for both D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa. Wingrove would be promoted a Boiler Technician, go on to serve on a variety of Navy ships in the Korean War and retire as a US Navy Chief Petty Officer.
