A-4 Skyhawk Landing on The USS Yorktown (CVS-10)

Name/Title

A-4 Skyhawk Landing on The USS Yorktown (CVS-10)

Description

Photograph of an A-4 Skyhawk with tailhook down, landing on the flightdeck of the USS Yorktown (CVS-10).

Context

A Navy light attack jet, The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was designed as a replacement for the still piston-driven Douglas A-1 Skyraider. The Skyhawks smaller size and lighter weight allowed it to still be utilized by the now aging Essex class carriers which were unable to launch heavier aircraft. Despite its small size, the Skyhawk would become an integral part of the Navy's arsenal during the Vietnam War. The Skyhawk served with the Navy from 1956 to 2003. Dan Bernath was a Photographer's Mate Petty Officer 3rd Class aboard the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) for the 1968 Westpac cruise, Apollo 8 recovery, and 1969 South American and North Atlantic cruises.
