USS Bon Homme Richard (CV-10) Builder's Plate Pattern

Name/Title

USS Bon Homme Richard (CV-10) Builder's Plate Pattern

Description

A light-weight, brown, rectangular plate with raised lettering detailing the building specifications of the USS Bon Homme Richard.

Use

This builder's plate pattern would have been used as a mold to create the builder's plates needed in construction of the (CV-10). Builder's plates offer such information as the manufacturer, the place of origin, and the dates of construction.

Context

The United States government originally ordered the aircraft carrier (CV-10) from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock company on July 3, 1940 under the name USS Bon Homme Richard. Newport News began construction on the carrier on December 1, 1941. On September 26, 1942, the name of the carrier was changed to the USS Yorktown to honor the USS Yorktown (CV-5) which had been sunk at the Battle of Midway three months prior. While the USS Bon Homme Richard builder's plate pattern was no longer needed after the name change, there are still parts of the USS Yorktown (CV-10) that still bear the original name.
