Slightom received the Navy Cross for his actions during the First Battle of the Philippine Sea, also called the Marianas Turkey Shoot, on June 20, 1944. After fighting through enemy planes and anti-aircraft fire, Slightom scored a torpedo hit against a Japanese carrier.
