Stuffed Donkey

Name/Title

Stuffed Donkey

Description

A white and red stuffed donkey toy with the names of Torpedo Squadron One's members carefully taped around the toy.

Use

Given to John Slightom by the members of Torpedo Squadron One as a present for his newborn baby boy. Unfortunately the baby would pass before the toy or Slightom could make it home.

Context

Lt. John "Sleepytime" Slightom was a pilot and member of Torpedo Squadron One (VT-1), which flew off the USS Yorktown (CV-10) during World War II. Slightom received the Navy Cross for his actions during the First Battle of the Philippine Sea, also called the Marianas Turkey Shoot, on June 20, 1944. After fighting through enemy planes and anti-aircraft fire, Slightom scored a torpedo hit against a Japanese carrier. Slightom fought his way back through more Japanese planes before making a successful night landing on Yorktown.
