SH-3G Sea King

Description

A white and gray helicopter with black blades and the National Aircraft Insignia consisting of a five-pointed white star on a circular blue field with red, white and blue vertical stripes on the sides. The Sea King has markings for the 'Navy,' 'HS-4,' and bureau number 149932. Built by Sikorsky Aircraft, SH-3 Sea King is an anti-submarine warfare helicopter with a twin-engine design and turboshaft engines. The SH-3G variant has cargo and utility transport upgrades for the US Navy.

Context

The Sea King was originally ordered by the US Navy to combat Soviet-era submarines during the Cold War but also performed transport, search and rescue and medevac operations. The SH-G Sea King was the recovery vehicle for the Apollo 8 capsule retrieval performed by the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) in 1968. The Sea King arrived at Patriots Point in 1993 and is on loan from the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida.
