This permit shows that Samuel Wingrove was issued this learner's permit on April 11, 1939. The reverse side of the card has a stamp signifying that Samuel successfully gained an operator's license on May 8, 1939.

Context

Learner's permits show that an individual is learning how to operate a motor vehicle but has not yet been given a full driver's license. The items in this collection were donated by Samuel Wingrove, a plank owner and Water Tender aboard the USS Laffey (DD-724) during World War II. Wingrove was present for both D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa. Wingrove would be promoted a Boiler Technician, go on to serve on a variety of Navy ships in the Korean War and retire as a US Navy Chief Petty Officer.
