Twelve US Navy ribbon bars sewn together by Samuel Wingrove to preserve the order.
Left to right, beginning with the top row:
1)Good Conduct Medal Ribbon Bar
Ribbon is a solid red with three bronze stars across the bar.
2) Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon Bar
Ribbon is green with vertical blue, white, and red stripes mirrored on either end. There is a single bronze star in the middle of the bar.
3) Navy Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon Bar:
Ribbon has horizontal blue, yellow, and red stripes. There is a single bronze star, or battle star, in the middle of the bar.
4) American Defense Service Military Ribbon Bar
Ribbon is yellow with thin vertical blue, white, and red stripes mirrored close to either end. There is a single bronze star in the middle of the bar.
5) American Campaign Medal Ribbon Bar
Ribbon is a light blue with a central set of vertical stripes of navy blue, red, and white, and with vertical stripes along either side of white, red, black, and white.
6) European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Medal Ribbon Bar
Ribbon is green with two vertical brown stripes at either end. Immediately next to the leftmost brown stripe are vertical stripes of green, white, and red. In the middle are vertical stripes of blue, white, and red, and next two the rightmost brown stripe are vertical stripes of white, black, and white. There are three bronze stars evenly spaced across the bar.
7) Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal Ribbon Bar
Ribbon is yellow with a central set of vertical stripes of navy blue, red, and white, and with vertical stripes along either side of white, red, and white. There are three bronze stars evenly spaced across the bar.
8) World War II Victory Medal Ribbon Bar
Ribbon is red with vertical rainbow striping on either border.
9) Navy Occupation Service Medal Ribbon Bar
Ribbon is vertical stripes of white, black, red, and white.
10) China Service Medal Ribbon Bar
Ribbon is yellow with two vertical red stripes close to either end.
11) National Defense Service Medal Ribbon Bar
Ribbon is red with vertical, thick yellow stripe in middle with red, white, and blue stripes on either side.

1)3) The Good Conduct Medal is awarded for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity in Federal military service. The three bronze stars indicate three additional awards of this medal.
2) The Navy Unit Commendation is awarded to a Navy or Marine Corps unit that has been distinguished by actions of outstanding heroism against the enemy. The single bronze star indicates an additional commendation awarded.
3) The Navy Presidential Unit Citation was awarded to Naval and Marine Corps units for outstanding performance in action. No star is given for the first award and bronze stars are added for subsequent awards.
4) The American Defense Service Military Medal is awarded to service members on active duty between September 8, 1939, and December 7, 1941.
5) The American Campaign Medal was awarded for service within the American Theater between December 7, 1941, and March 2, 1946.
6) The European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Medal was awarded for military service during the European Theater during World War II. The three stars represented participation during different campaigns or special duties.
7) The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal was awarded any member of the United States Armed Forces who served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater from 1941 to 1945. Recipients of the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal are eligible for to wear a bronze star for each designated campaign in which they participated.
8) The World War II Victory Medal was awarded for service between December 7, 1941, and December 31, 1946, dates inclusive, with no minimum time in service requirement.
9) The Navy Occupation Service Medal was awarded for service of Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel in the occupation of specific enemy territories of the United States during World War II and recognized servicemembers who participated in the European and Asian occupation forces following World War II.
10) The China Service Medal was awarded to US Navy, Marine, or Coast Guard personnel who served in and around China from July 7, 1937 to September 7, 1939 and/or September 2, 1945 to April 1, 1957.
11) The National Defense Service Medal is awarded to any member of the US Armed Forces who served in one of four periods of conflict: the Korean War (1950–1954), the Vietnam War (1961–1974), the Gulf War (1990–1995), and/or the Global War on Terrorism (2001–2022).
12) The Korean Service Medal was awarded for service in operations in the Korean area during the Korean War from June 27, 1950, to July 27, 1954.Context
These ribbon bars were awarded to Samuel Wingrove for his US Navy service. A plank owner and Water Tender aboard the USS Laffey (DD-724) during World War II, Wingrove was present for both D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa.
Wingrove would be promoted a Boiler Technician, go on to serve in the Korean War and retire as a US Navy Chief Petty Officer.Collection
