Chambless was a Marine aviator serving from roughly 1956-1958 during the Vietnam War as a part of VMF(AW)-531, an all-weather fighter squadron. The "Grey Ghosts," as the squadron was known, largely flew carrier-based fighters, Douglas F4D-1 Skyrays, during this period.Acquisition
