Grey Ghosts Squadron Flight Helmet

Description

A blue, Vietnam-era Marine pilot's helmet, with white and gold skull and lightning motif of the Grey Ghosts fighter squadron. A label with the name 'Chambless' is present on the front and back of the helmet. The original black radio headset attachment and visor are attached to the helmet.

Use

This flight helmet was designed with impact protection, radio capabilities, sun protection, and oxygen mask compatibility in mind for the pilot wearing it.

Context

Chambless was a Marine aviator serving from roughly 1956-1958 during the Vietnam War as a part of VMF(AW)-531, an all-weather fighter squadron. The "Grey Ghosts," as the squadron was known, largely flew carrier-based fighters, Douglas F4D-1 Skyrays, during this period.
