TBM-3E Avenger

Description

A navy, blue, and white aircraft with the Insignia Blue National Aircraft Symbol consisting of a five-pointed white star on a circular blue field with white and blue bars on either side on both the sides and under the wings of the Avenger. The Avenger's bureau number is 69344. The General Motors TBM Avenger is a torpedo-bomber with folding wings first introduced in 1942. The Avenger required a three-person crew to fly: the pilot, a gunner, and a radioman. The TBM-3E variant had an engine upgrade, stronger frame and added search radar, but no ventral gun.

Context

Originally developed for use by the US Navy and Marine Corps, the TBM Avengers were first deployed at the Battle of Midway in 1942. Designed for ease of storage on aircraft carriers, Avengers were the most widely used torpedo bombers of World War II. Owned by Patriots Point, the TBM-3E Avenger arrived onsite in 1975.
