Use

With the popularity of smoking in the 1940s, cigarettes were considered a necessity on par with food by the military, and every effort was made to distribute them to servicemembers.

Context

This packet of cigarettes was received by Helen Robinson while she was touring the USS Laffey (DD-724) while it was on display to the public in Seattle, Washington following the Battle off Okinawa. An unnamed Laffey sailor gave her the cigarettes hoping to get a date.
