USS Laffey (DD-724) Decommissioning Pennant

Name/Title

USS Laffey (DD-724) Decommissioning Pennant

Description

A long, streamer-like strip of fabric, the commissioning pennant is blue at the hoist point, with seven white stars. The remainder of the pennant is made up of a pair of long red and white stripes. The fabric is particularly time-worn, with the hoist end attempting to separate from the remainder of the pennant.

Use

A commissioning pennant is the hallmark of a commissioned naval ship. With few exceptions, a pennant is flown at all times as long as the ship is commissioned and will no longer be flown when decommissioned.

Context

This commissioning pennant flew aboard USS Laffey (DD-724) during her first decommissioning in October 1947. Radioman (RM 3/c) Vincent Gattuso was the last man to leave the ship and pulled this pennant down on his way ashore.
