Description

A navy blue, US Navy rate insignia sleeve patch with a full red chevron, a gray circular boiler technician symbol in the chevron and a gray spread eagle perched on top. The patch was originally sewn onto a US Navy uniform, also navy blue, but was later cut out and removed.

Worn as part of a US Navy uniform to denote years of rank and rate, the full chevron denotes a Chief Petty Officer while the circular symbol in the center denotes a Boiler Technician.

Context

This rating badge was part of a uniform issued to and worn by Samuel Wingrove. A plank owner and Water Tender aboard the USS Laffey (DD-724) during World War II, Wingrove was present for both D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa. Wingrove would be promoted a boiler Technician, go on to serve in the Korean War and retire as a US Navy Chief Petty Officer.
