A set of five gold, diagonal stripes on the background of a black patch. The patch was originally sewn onto a US Navy uniform, also black, but was later cut out and removed.

Worn as part of a US Navy uniform to denote years of service, each hash mark symbolizes four years of service. This set of stripes denotes at least twenty years of US Navy service.

Context

This set of service stripes was part of a uniform issued to and worn by Samuel Wingrove. A plank owner and Water Tender aboard the USS Laffey (DD-724) during World War II, Wingrove was present for both D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa. Wingrove would go on to serve in the Korean War and retire as a US Navy Chief Petty Officer.
