USS Yorktown (CVS-10)

Name/Title

USS Yorktown (CVS-10)

Description

Photograph of the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) at sea. McDonnell F2H Banshees, Sikorsky SH-3 Sea Kings, and Grumman S-2 Trackers can be seen waiting on the flightdeck.

Context

Starting in the late 1950's the Yorktown was moved into the role of an antisubmarine warfare carrier. This meant her complement of aircraft would be tooled for that mission. The Tracker, Tracer, and Sea King would handle the antisubmarine missions, while the Banshee served as an escort and light reconnaissance fighter. Dan Bernath was a Photographer's Mate Petty Officer 3rd Class aboard the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) for the 1968 Westpac cruise, Apollo 8 recovery, and 1969 South American and North Atlantic cruises.
