Remarks

Note

“There is no attempt at realism. The essentials are there to convey the meaning, that is all. Nothing is added as embellishment or decoration. The Visitor, for instance, is absolutely complete. We recognize this visitor. No matter that dress and upholstery are one, that there is no head, and that the chair legs and the visitor's legs are one. The figure, in prim dark dress bordered with neat pleats, hands together in her lap, gives, nevertheless, a contradictory impression of aggressive sexuality. Her legs are spread far apart. Her many breasts allude to the famous statue of Ephesus of Artemis, Goddess of Fecundity. She makes us uncomfortable. She is not, after all, called The Guest or The Friend.” —Phyllis Diebenkorn, “Reflections on the Work of Paul Harris,” exhibition catalogue for Paul Harris Sculpture, Certain Pieces, 1958–1980, 1981.
