Entry/Object ID

Description

A sepia tone cabinet photo of the Chamberlain farm homestead in Brewer, ME. This would have been Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's grandfather's (Col. Joshua Chamberlain's) family's farm. JLC referred to this farm as running 440 yards “on the river” and extending “more than a mile and a quarter” inland from atop the “monumental headland” rising steeply above the Penobscot River opposite Bangor. On verso in pen is written, "Chamberlain home, 350 No. Main Street taken about 1818." The location is incorrect as 350 No. Main Street, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's birthplace, is a very different structure. The date is also incorrect (photography not prevalent in America until 1850s). In fact, the photo appears to have been taken in the mid to late 19th century.
