Helen L. Varney was born in Brunswick, ME 05 Aug 1872, daughter of Amos F. and Alice W. (Wyatt) Varney, and great-granddaughter of the founder of Dennison Box Company. She began teaching at Brunswick's (Maine) Bath Street School in 1890, immediately after graduating from high school and retired as Brunswick High School art teacher and supervisor of all of the town's art education programs in 1948. She studied art in several locations, including the Massachusetts School of Art in Boston, the Portland arts center and Bowdoin College. After her retirement from teaching in public schools she continued to give private lessons. During World War II she was involved in arts and crafts programs with the USO. She was a delegate to several art conferences, including the International Arts Congress in Paris in 1937. She died in Portland 06 Jul 1960. Photo not dated.
