“At The Tiller” is a fine example of Laws’ preferred style, described by her as “romantic realism” and focusing on marine scenes and landscapes. This painting depicts a man sitting at the tiller of a boat wearing a classic boating outfit down to a floppy fisherman’s hat. The oil painting, photographed here in black and white, is one of 27 that Laws completed while in residency on the Caribbean island country of Grenada for a year. She refers to that year as the most prolific she had ever been in her life, stating to the Times Record newspaper in 1983, "I never painted that much before and probably never will again."
