A stereo view of Memorial Hall on Bowdoin College Campus, Brunswick, ME. In 1865, a meeting of the alumni considered what measures should be taken for a monument or memorial for the sons of Bowdoin College who had died or taken part personally in the war. It was decided that a memorial building was the form the monument should take. It was urged that in the building there would be inscriptions, busts, portraits, flags, etc. that could be preserved. The college was also in need for more lecture-rooms, a hall for exhibitions, and a common rallying point for the alumni so these were also added to the memorial building. Prof. William Smyth was primarily responsible for the building's design and fundraising. Today, The Memorial Hall is known as Pickard Theatre. 1894.Collection
