Dr. Knowles was the eighth recipient of the Distinguished Bowdoin Educator Award in 1972 and the Bowdoin Prize, the college's highest honor, in 1979.
Knowles graduated from Bowdoin in 1930. He was president of the University of Toledo from 1951-1958 and president of Northeastern University from 1959-1975.
