Harriet Beecher Stowe House. c. 1920 or earlier. Postcard of the Harriet Beecher Stowe House in Brunswick, Maine, where she wrote the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin." The house is located at 63 Federal Street. Calvin and Harriet Stowe rented the house from 1850 - 1852 while Calvin taught at Bowdoin College. Harriet's book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was influential across the United States just before the Civil War, at a time when the issue of slavery was in great debate. Harriet left Brunswick with her family in September 1852 for Andover, Massachusetts, where Calvin became a professor at the Theological Seminary.
