Description

A B/W photo of children on steps of Center Street School. The African American boy in the center of the photo is Edwin Hill, son of William T. Hills, a porter at the rail station. The family had two daughters, Bessie and Elizabeth, and two sons, William Jr. and Edwin. William Jr. died in the summer of 1918 at 21 of pneumonia, days after registering for the draft. Edwin was the youngest of the four. He was the only one in the family born in Maine (Brunswick, 1909). The family lived at 171 Maine Street/Park Row from 1910 until 1933 when they sold the house and moved to Brooklyn, NY. They had previously lived on Everett Street. Edwin and at least one of his two older sisters (Elizabeth) graduated from Brunswick High School.
