Description

Sepia photo showing the Tontine Hotel, and adjacent buildings at School and Maine Streets, Brunswick, Maine. Built on the corner of Maine and School Streets in 1828 at the cost of $7000, it was considered one of the most luxurious hotels in the State of Maine. It housed thirty apartments, a banquet hall, stables for 50 horses and also served as a station for the stage coach. A fire built to thaw frozen pipes burned the hotel to the ground on a cold January night in 1904.
